Geothermal heat pumps for residential heating
As the name suggests, this category of heat pumps will utilize water found underground to regulate the temperature of your home. A geothermal heat pump typically comprises a network of pipes. These pipes are installed in the ground and are connected into your home by travelling through ducts. Your chosen heat pump will either have pipes containing an antifreeze liquid or water. When the heat pump is on, the fluid within the pipes will travel from the ground and into your home while absorbing the ambient temperature. During the summer months, the heat pump's fan will circulate cold air from the pipes and during the winter months, the fan will circulate hot air from the pipes.
It should be noted that although geothermal heat pumps are energy efficient, they do tend to be quite expensive to install. A significant amount of drilling is required to get them underground, which can only be done be professional contractors. However, they will save you money in the long run by decreasing your utility bills.
Air-source heat pumps for residential heating
Just as geothermal heat pumps use pipes to regulate the temperatures in your home, this is the only similarity between them and air-source heat pumps. The pipes comprising air-source heat pumps contain a specialized liquid that absorbs heat from the outdoors. Once the liquid has become heated, it converts into a gas that is pumped into your home using a compressor. Once indoors, the gas condenses to form a liquid from which heat will emanate from. This heat is what is circulated around your home to warm your house during the colder months.
It should be noted that unlike geothermal heat pumps, air-source pumps are ideal for areas that are not predominantly cold. This is because they rely mainly on the air outdoors to provide heating for your home; hence, if the weather is perpetually cold, they will not be of much service.
